EARTHQUAKE APPEAL

DEAREST FRIENDS & FAMILY:

As you all know, there has been a devastating earthquake here in Christchurch, New Zealand — possibly the largest natural disaster in this country’s history. This is the third earthquake since September 4th, 2010 when we experienced a 7.1 magnitude shake. This one, though of a smaller magnitude at 6.3, was centered within the city limits and has caused widespread destruction and chaos (as has been seen via CNN, etc — http://www.3news.co.nz/ ).

As a result, Kate and I are without power, water, and sewer (I’m writing this from a friend’s place on the western outskirts of the city). From what we’ve seen and heard, a significant portion of the sewer/water infrastructure on the east side of Christchurch is damaged beyond quick repair and will likely take months for many residents to be back in “business” (us included as we live in the hard-hit half of the city).

At this time, rather than going into details about damage and such want to get straight to the point. (see other posts for details)

Many of you have asked HOW YOU CAN HELP US:

1. We are here to serve the people of the city. I (Noah) have been working to cover our living expenses, but this has obviously become strained because of the quake.

2. Rather than worrying about work, we want to free ourselves to serve the city full-time during this period of crisis. (Returning to work after it’s over)

3. We live on approx. $1800 USD per month

4. We estimate that we will be “off the water/sewer grid” for 1-3 months // this also applies to 40% of folks in the eastern portion of the city

5. We could use resources to carry us through 1-3 months or until peace and normal living are restored to the city.

6. Additional resources will be used to help our neighbors and fellow Cantabrians (Canterbury residents) to the best of our abilities.
